Practical travel tips

Prague's public transport (metro, trams, buses, suburban trains) is reliable and covers the entire city. You can now buy season tickets with a contactless card directly on the tram or bus. You can also buy them via SMS, in an app, at vending machines or at newsstands. Depending on where you are staying and how often you will use public transport, you can choose a 30-minute, 90-minute, all-day or 3-day ticket.

Most of the main sights are located in the city centre and are best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes, as the Old Town's roads are often cobbled and can be slippery when wet.

There are also proven apps such as Bolt or Uber available. Be careful with taxi services, especially if you are going from the main train station. It is better to ask for the price in advance.

Prague is a safe city, but be careful of pickpockets, especially in busy areas, such as when waiting for the Astronomical Clock or on public transport.

Plan your route in advance – some attractions, like Charles Bridge or the Old Town Square in front of the Astronomical Clock, are packed with tourists every hour, especially in high season and in good weather. Visit them early in the morning or in the evening.

Keep up with current events – concerts, exhibitions, farmers' markets, which take place almost all year round. For example, they hold great markets every Saturday morning on the embankment.

Go outside the center – for example, to the famous zoological or botanical gardens or to Troja Castle. You can also take day trips from Prague to other interesting places in the Czech Republic – for example, you can get to Kutná Hora by train from the Main Station in an hour, to Český Krumlov by bus in 2.5 hours – be careful, different companies leave from different stations.

The official currency is the Czech crown (CZK). However, almost everywhere in Prague they also accept EURO or credit cards. If you want to exchange some money, use official exchange offices and ATMs, avoid street exchange offices.

Prague has beautiful panoramas. The most beautiful views can be enjoyed from the Petřín Lookout Tower, Vyšehrad, Letná Gardens or the South Garden of Prague Castle. A boat ride offers a great view of the city from an unconventional perspective.

In tourist areas, most people understand English, but the local staff will be happy to help you with basic Czech.
The city information centers in the city center offer free maps and advice. If this is your first time in Prague, we recommend booking a local guide.
